When tragically passed
To the great unknown
When spirit of the body
Has finally outgrown
When laid to rest
Are your old bones
A tribute will stand
That’s written in stone
Life now summed up
By the dash between dates
A symbol that does it best
But can never illuminate
All that you were
All that we celebrate
Squashed into that space
A memorial fate
All that once was
Now a solitary line
Between those two dates
Displaying your time
All those years of adventure
Are compressed, redefined
Life becomes a hyphen
On your masonry shine

Excellent piece. I’ve never quite thought of the hyphen that way

I can’t remember where I heard it first but it’s an idea that’s been with me for a while and felt fitting to do something with it now. glad you enjoyed it!

It’s always a question about what kind of life a person led from that little line.

So full of questions and adventures and memories that it’s imbued with so much power. It’s had to sum up a life and harder still to symbolise which make the hyphen one of the moment interesting pieces of punctuation.

Couldn’t agree more it’s a great journey that’s so hard to truly describe.
